Just as a matter of interest do you use the guides and if so in what way are they used? Do you ever use the large guides?

Tom, router guides are used for pattern routing! I have personally only used them a few times over the years, however guide bushings add a lot of capability to the router. A good example is the Porter Cable 4212 dovetail jig - it uses a simple dovetail router bit with guide bushings. Router bits with ball bearing pilot bearings (both top or bottom bearings) eliminate the need of the guide bushing, however they are more expensive than a simple router bit.

Cutters with bearings limit what really can be done with a router , once you take up the challenge and invest in a set of template guides then you will be able to produce a greater number of projects. There is a need to select large guides such as the 40mm / 1-1/2" to give you access to greater number of projects that can be achieved. Take time to watch the videos I have posted on youtube
